Aboriginal STEM Congress

Hi all,

On the 16th and 17th of September, we were lucky to attend the Aboriginal Education STEM Conference. Due to covid restrictions we were only allowed to have two students attend the two days, Darcy and Shaelah were the lucky students this year.

The days started early and we were on the 8.25am train heading into the Convention Centre. There were over 250 students from various schools around the state. Our students heard from speakers such as Bruce Pascoe who wrote the book 'Dark Emu' as well as Elder Uncle Moogy.

Some of the activities that our students chose to participate in were visiting the Makers Empire where we heard from start up business owners and entrepreneurs, how to use native plants for traditional purposes where Darcy was a big fan of the lemon myrtle tea. We finished the congress with an elders walk and talk at Adelaide Oval.

Overall we hope the students had fun and enjoyed learning a bit more about our cultural history and future ambitions.

The congress was really well organised and run by the YASTSA group which stands for 'Young Aboriginal Stem Thinkers of South Australia'. We look forward to attending again next year and hope that we will be able to take more students with us.

Thanks,

Jess and Darren
